View Full Version : New To The Game
Hi guys...
My name is Bile, and I first bought Marine Corps last year. I played it one night and decided it wasn't for me. I didn't like the graphics, the gameplay was laggy, and overall it just wasn't a fun experience for me. I took the game with the receipt back to where I bought it and was given a refund. "So much for that crappy game", I thought to myself.
Since then, I would run across websites that give reviews to games. Marine Corps always received a very low score from the critics, but a high score from players. This made me curious about the game again. Was there something I missed the first time?
This past week, I saw a copy of the game again in a store (for half the price that I paid for it the first time). I figured I'd give it one more shot, and if I didn't like it...well, it hardly cost anything anyway.
Within minutes of playing it I saw what I missed the first time around. I customized my character and jumped into a round. I actually started having FUN playing it! Sometimes, a game can be good just because it offers a different experience while playing it...it doesn't have to have top notch graphics that max out your PC's capabilities. Marine Corps is definitely a game that falls into that category. I'm glad I gave it a second chance after all.
Hope to see you all in the game.

Welcome to the battlefield mate.
Nice that you like the game, we all here have played for ages and still play.
Whenever you have a question, just ask, you'll nearly always get an answer.
See U on the Battlefield!
Thanks for the welcome!
I'll try to refer to the game as Soldner instead of Marine Corps from now on. I couldn't figure out why every time I looked up "Marine Corps PC Game" in Google I would be taken to the Soldner site. I guess the game is more popular with European gamers than with those here in the U.S.
I read about the history of this game, and why it was repackaged for sale in the U.S. Some sites warn that it might be hard to understand the players in the game because most of them don't speak English, but I had no problem last night communicating with everyone. I'm glad there are people still devoted to the game, otherwise it would have never made it to the U.S. and I wouldn't be here talking about it.
I hope to see some of you online when I have the chance to play.
Also, could someone explain to me what the Frontline game mode's objectives are? I looked for an explanation on the site but didn't see any.

No problem Mate.
The objective of the frontline Mode is to conquer Checkpoits (CPs) in a certain order.
That means: you hav to conquer CP Alpha first, before you can take over CP Bravo and so on.
And so at a certain poit both teams will meet each other at one CP, there's the Frontline, which can be moved, by capturing the next Cp.
Hope this will answer your Question.
Yes, thanks.
I am familiar with this game mode, but in other games that I play it is called something else (in Unreal 2004, it's called Onslaught). I am still getting used to the terms used in Soldner. I can't wait to get home this evening and play it!
Another Question:
How possible is it that people are using hacks in the game? I played someone last night that was making the most incredible shots, and it was impossible to get the drop on him. I realize that some people are just good, but his skills were pushing it. At one point, he stopped for a second and I squeezed off a shot with a sniper rifle from among some trees high up on a hill. His back was towards me, but he managed to turn around, roll to the side, and fire uphill with an M4 and kill me with one shot. He didn't even have time to look for me. BAM. Dead. He continued these miracle shops for the rest of the round. Even his own teammates didn't want to play with him. They would let us take the flag and just watch while he'd get angry and start hurling insults at them.
Because I can't prove he was cheating, I won't mention his name here. I would rather hear that he was just a damn good player rather than he was cheating. But if it is possible that he was using hacks, I'd also like to know.

i've been playing soldner for about 2 years now, and i have heard that there arent any cheats for soldner, due to the fact that there never were enough players that it would have made sense to program cheats.
ps: pm with his name please :)

soldner as an anti cheat system but never saw it doing anything so.. i really dont know how efective it is :o
but i nerver saw a cheater in soldner

That's a really smart move, as using names is not allowed on this board, as long as the person someone talks about has not entered the discussion.
Btw, if you see someone insulting someone else (in a really bad manner), you can make screenshots of that (by pressing F11) and send those screenshots to McMarty, who will then take action. Or not xD
I have PM'd several people and the matter is cleared up. This guy was just a good player. Thanks to all that straightened it out for me.
Yet another dumb question:
What is the difference between a server ban and a portal ban? How do portal bans work?
I noticed that some people have been given portal bans for not observing server bans. Does that mean if you're banned from a server, you can just join it again if you want? Believe me, I'm not looking to get banned...I'm just curious about everything involved with this game.
A server ban affects, if my information is correct, only the nickname that is banned. Also, it only applies to one server A portal ban blocks the banned CD-Key and is thus incredibly more effective, as it prohibits (and actually makes it impossible) further online play until the ban is lifted.
Does a portal ban apply to all servers, or just the server in which the player has been banned from?
For instance, if someone is TK'ing in one server and receives a portal ban, can they join another server and continue disrupting gameplay? Or does the portal ban stop people from joining ANY server?
It applies to all servers.
Of course, I may be wrong, since I don't work here xD
Wow, that's pretty effective. It makes a person think twice about being a jerk in the servers...but after looking at the Portal Ban section and seeing all of the names there, I guess some people have thicker heads than others.
Thanks for all of the info.
Server ban is only for that server you were playing on. But portal ban bans you from all servers. Since your connection is always connecting through this Portal server.
Is this the only game that you know of that has a ban as effective as this? I haven't heard of a ban that powerful...not even in games like BF2 or Joint Ops.

Every game using a portal server could be using this method (99% of all games released lately). But to be honest, most companies don't give a shit about cheaters/teamkillers as long as their game is selling!
Soldner only has this 'feature' since the portal payed by JoWood was shut down and PZ/gEasy started their own portal server. And as PZ/gEasy are mainly active players they are interested in keeping 'their' game clean!
The only other thing where the company behind it does at least something is vAlve and their VAC, but I don't think that they care about teamkillers, as the server ban system in Steam-based games is much more effective. If you get banned from a server (and if the admin knows at least a bit what he's doing), you will usually get banned by IP or even SteamID. The latter is like a portal ban, just for one server, as the SteamID is uniquely bound to one account and all it's games.
Yeah, I forgot about Steam. I personally have never heard of anyone losing their Steam account due to hacking, but I have seen lots of them get banned from individual servers. I have also had friends have their Steam accounts hijacked and not be able to play any of Valve's games. That's the burden of having a bunch of games tied to one user name and password.

dude Vac sucks punkbuster is way better, yeah your right vac bans by steam Id and also bans by engine if you cheat on CSS all your source games will be banned and if you cheat on CS 1.6 all your Hl1 engine games will be baned , but you can still play but on non-secure servers
How do I find out all of the features of Soldner? I was trying to get the hang of deploying the parachute last night, but with no luck ("Look out below!"). There are lots of other things that I'd like to find out how to do, but I don't want to keep asking everyone while we're playing because it disturbs everyone's game. I'm also having some difficulty getting choppers to do what I want, so I"m assuming that there's something that I'm not doing. I can get altitude, but when I pitch the nose of the chopper down slightly to make it move it seems like it doesn't really go anywhere...and firing weapons in the air is a guessing game to me at the moment. Is there an online manual somewhere?

You open the parachute by pressing "E", to be shure, press it several times. The Parachute only opens at speeds lower than 250 km/h
How do you steer your choppers? Standard is Mouse and Keyboard.
Keyboard: W increases altitude, S decreases,
A turn left, D turn right.
Mouse:
move away from you: choppers goes forward
move towards you: chopper moves Backwards
Mouse left, chopper flies to the left
Mouse right: Chopper flies to the right
And aimimng with the guns is a thing of practice. I play Soldner for more tahn 2 years and still don't hit anything with unguided missiles.
Keep trying and asking.
You may of course always join one of the public Söldner TS servers, but not everyone there speaks english :D Also, you can join the officially inofficial Söldner IRC-Channel #ssw on quakenet, and ask away.
Edit: As I said, vAlve and their VAC ;)
Also, afaik Punkbuster is no longer under development. Or was that CheatingDeath? One of those major anti-cheating tools is more or less outdated by now.

cheating Death is no longer updated , punkbuster is and its done fast ;)
I've only used Cheating Death in my TFC days, so I kinda lost track and interest. Hardly any Steam based game anymore that I like playing online.
You should definately give tf2 a go. And Portal (No MP, but the community is working on it) if you have a good sense of humor. Its maybe 2-3hours of gameplay, but you are in for a ride! Every single line is funny. thumbsup
I wanted to buy it two weeks ago, but it wasn't out in Germany (or so the store clerk told me). And I don't have a credit card to buy it via Steam. Right now, I'm too broke anyway :D
